Martin Soprano Ukulele For Sale
$550.00 + shipping
This is an early Martin 1M soprano ukulele. It would have come with wooden friction tuners and someone replaced them with old Waverlys. The holes had to be filled with mahogany and redrilled. It was nicely done. These tuners are actually quite high end for the time period. They were more commonly used on the style 3 and 5 for Martin and only on the special high end pieces from Kamaka as well. The original tuner holes were filled and redrilled to accomodate the smaller hole for the Waverly's. I believe it could be retrofitted with original wood pegs if desired. Whoever owned this uke took the time to find those tuners and clearly did so so that they could keep to some level of functional playability and still be consistent with what Martin was using on the higher end ukes of the time. The string slots have been widened slightly at the bridge to accomodate the larger diameters of modern strings. As is typical, small beads are then ussed on the end of the strings to hold them tight in the slots. Mahogany body and neck with higher end Brazilian rosewood binding, bridge, and fretboard.

The uke is likely from around the early 1920s, or possibly later teens, because of the wood binding and the Martin logo imprinted into the wood on the on the back of the headstock instead of the modern decal on the front. The 1M model was changed in early production from the Brazilian rosewood bindings on this uke  to a faux tortoise shell binding. As a consequence, ukes of this vintage are slightly more collectible to some people. Given the condition and all things considered, the current market value seems to be around $700 ish plus or minus. I consider this to be a player with vintage charisma rather than a collector's uke.No cracks on the front. The back has 2 small tight cracks that can be seen in the photo. Outside of that it  is quite nice condition. After this photo, strings were changed to new black Tynex GHS strings. Good volume for a soprano ukulele. Comes with a typical worn chipboard case.

Because of the Brazilian rosewood used on this ukulele, I can not ship it to destinations outside of the U.S. Flat rate shipping and handling of $95.00 in the U.S. by Priority Mail. Hawaii State residents would have State Sales Tax added to final value. Thanks for looking.
