Moving A Koa Canoe Log

In November of 2007 I helped in the moving of a koa canoe log. This 47 foot log, weighing possibly as much as 15,000 lbs., had to be moved from deep in the koa forest at about the 6,000 foot level, several miles out to an access road. The log was later trucked to Kona, Hawaii where it will be shaped into a traditional Hawaiian koa canoe. It took some major equipment to do it. The first attempt involved strapping a set of wheels onto the rear of the log and trying to pull the log with a skidder. That did not work! Eventually the rear had to be lifted and chained onto another piece of heavy equipment and the two vehicles worked together to truck the log out. In the final photo, the log end is being waxed to prevent drying out and cracking.
