Starting Koa Seeds
Anne and I have been involved in planting koa seedlings in the forest for many years. In the past however, we have only planted seeds started by others. To be more involved in the process, we are trying to grow our own seedlings to plant out.
Koa seeds in the pod. Much like peas ( Koa is a legume like peas.) each pod contains several seeds. The seeds must be shelled from the pod.

These seeds were covered with hot water, and then allowed to cool and soak overnight.

The seeds were then planted out in dipple tubes containing 1/2 potting soil and 1/2 volcanic cinder.

The seeds were covered with 1/2" of soil and then 196 dipple tubes were of seeds placed out under our bananas in partial shade. The seeds should sprout in 2-3 weeks. Check back around the 1st of December 2009 to see how it's going.
